I PURCHASED THIS PRODUCT (NOT FROM AMAZON.CO.UK) AND FOUND IT TO DO EVERYTHING EXCEPT FOR THREE DRAW BACKS

1) THE CHARACTERS ARE VERY SMALL ON THE SCREEN, HENCE YOU HAVE TO BEND CLOSE TO THE SCREEN TO BE ABLE TO READ. YOU CANNOT THEREFORE WORK FOR LONG HOURS ON THE SYSTEM.

2) BEING A 1.33GHZ SYSTEM I FIND IT SLOW, EXPECIALLY WHEN IT IS BUTTING.

3) NAVICATING WITH THE POINTING STICK IS RATHER DIFFICULT, AN EXTERNAL MOUSE WILL SOLVE THIS PROBLEM ALBEIT LIVING YOU WITH ONLY ONE USB PORT FOR OTHER CONNECTIONS.

When i first found out about this laptop, i thought it was value for money, as it got all the features that money can buy.

However it does NOT have a CD/DVD ROM drive.

Online web sites such as BBC I PLAYER, YOUTUBE works on this great laptop ideal if you are in hotspots as this has Integrated Wireless LAN

SONY external USB CD/DVD drive can be bought which plugs into the USB socket and works great, also another mains outlet is needed to plug the external CD/DVD drive. Model No. Sony DRX-S70U-R External Slimline DVDRW Retail USB

 "Best netbook so far" 2009-09-25
By G. Dykes (Southampton)
Had been waiting a long time for the right netbook, draft"n" wireless, the N280 processor and a screen resolution better than the standard netbook 1024 x 600. Well the Sony fitted the bill perfectly and the prices have been dropping quickly with it. So, the spec of all netbooks inside is pretty much routine, but I picked up one of these Sony's for the screen which is in a different league to ALL the 1024 x 600 netbooks out there, together with Sony X Black screen technology and with a 1368 x 768 the netbook in my view has taken a major step forward. Personally I prefer glossy screens ( which the sony has )ok if you really want to use your netbook in bright sunlight, then gloosy not so good, but the plus side is that in almost all other situations, you have that lovely vibrant colours and contrast that matt screens can't deliver, and with 1368 x 768 you have a very nice viewing experience indeed be it websites, spreadsheets or media. The Sony plays back BBC Iplayer with a lovely lush vibrant image !Ok the battery life is crap so if that is your priority then maybe this isnt suitable for you, although a much bigger battery is available and they are so small it would be no problem to carry a spare one, and at least the netbook doesnt end up looking like a small laptop attached to a battery !!! Keyboard is fine once you get used to it, and the whole netbook exudes Sony quality everywhere, sorry Asus and Aspire !!

I have just finished tweaking windows XP turning off all the start up items and services that you dont need ( use msconfig ) and the little sony nips along very nicely now and plays back any media file you throw at it, including divx ( with the codecs added ).

To sum up, once you have seen the high res x black screen on this machine you will laugh at all the other netbooks out there. Thoroughly recommended, check prices though, they are all over the place at moment with the imminent arrival of Windows 7, the remaining XP stock of netbooks are selling v cheap if you shop around.

"Fantastic little laptop just don't expect speed!" 2009-10-22
By Yet another computer geek (Shropshire, UK)
I've just bought this from Amazon and am amazed the size of the device, it's tiny!! I agree with other reviews that the p series is quite slow (you get a "Windows Experience Index" of just 1.9 due to the Atom processor) but if you upgrade to Windows 7, turn off Aero, remove some of the preinstalled software and stop unnecessary services then it runs fine. If, like me, you're going to use it to check email, write the odd Word document and view photos from a memory card whilst out and about then it's perfect. I would not buy this to replace a desktop or even regular laptop but if you just want it to take with you wherever you go then you'll be happy with it.

 "Disappointing" 2009-09-15
By Shirley Conran
I was deeply disappointed by this product. After 3 hours spent trying to set up and install basic Outlook software, my technician said that he thought that it was a cross between a mobile phone and a toy. The default font was so small that I needed to revert to the larger custom font, which was still too small for my purpose. Once the font had been made larger, it was not possible to see a complete web page, nor was it possible to access the necessary buttons in order to navigate the website to buy the Outlook product I needed to install.

So a wasted morning but I am grateful that Amazon have agreed to accept this as a return. I doubt I shall ever again buy another Sony new to market product.

Parents beware.

 "P Series review" 2009-04-29
By Mr. Pg Downward
I chose this product to replace a larger, less mobile laptop due to the amount of travel my work involves.

The size of this machine has to be its reason for purchase, although very small and mobile it does suffer as it is a slow runner! It takes its time to boot and open applications, also a large amount of heat is prodused on the underside.

I do like this laptop as it is ideal for having a PC on the move and having space to spare. I would recommend it to people in the same situation. I would not however recommend it as a full time substitute for a laptop, battery life is small and the keyboard/pointer can prove to be difficult for prolonged use.

Due to the country I am working in I have not had use of the 3G benifits. I look forward to updating this review on return to to UK.

 "Great little notebook" 2009-12-04
By Caragioiu Teodor Ale (Cyprus)
I got this only for screen resolution 1366x768

It turns out to be highly demanding for your eyes as the fonts are extremely small, if you have any eyesight issues forget about this item. However, if you have a good eyesight and you need a big space for your programs or browsing, then this is an excellent choice.

I use this to go to the customers and to the construction site and often I use autocad to view some details on various drawings. For this is why I bought it for, for this I am awarding 5 stars.

If you would turn to the version with Windows 7, maybe the fonts will be bigger.

Got this mini notebook and have been using it since. works very well and is light and easy to carry. Keyboard easy to use as well. Battery life only about 3 hours but that is all it supposed to last. I increased the memory size as was only 1Gb.

Would recommend this to anybody looking for a lightweight netbook.

 "What an excellent netbook!" 2009-10-16
By A. Sharma
It took Sony a while to release there first netbook, but the result is not at all dissapointing. The machines design is very impressive and it looks exactly like a scaled-down version of Sony's larger products. The textured palmrest proves suitably durable and the solid matt-white lid also provides excellent protection for the screen.

It also has one of the better netbook keyboards as the keys are speced out, larger than most netbooks and more responsive. The touchpad is particularly large and boasts big, responsive buttons, making for an excellent working environment. The 160GB hard drive also provides plenty of room for all your files and folders.

As a netbook, portability is one of the biggest issues. Weighing in at only 1.1kg including the 3 cell battery which provides around 2.5 hours usage from a full charge. It would be advisable to keep the power adaptor with you when away for extensive periods.

Connectivity is also excellent. This netbook features 802.11N wifi, which is used to gain better speeds and coverage compared to the usual laptop and netbook standard of 802.11G. This netbook also includes bluetooth for wireless interactions with compatible devices such as smartphones or PDA's.

After praising this netbook, the only disadvantages of it would be the price tag. It is slightly more than your average netbook, but for a 720P HD screen, bluetooth and 802.11N wireless connectivity, it might just be worth it.

"Surpassed all my expectations - superb" 2009-08-22
By Andreas Iacovou (London)
I was almost put off buying this after reading some of the reviews on here and other sites but I'm so glad I took a gamble! This is one of the most amazing looking devices I have owned. I've been looking for a netbook / mini laptop for ages and have tried variants from Asus, Samsung, Toshiba and HP. All were ok but all had a deal breaking flaw (they wern't small enough and /or usable). I will admit the Sony can be a tad slow with Vista at times, but it just needs some tinkering. Remove all the rubbish, install an anti-virus that doesn't use all the available resources, use readyboost, and wait patiently for Windows 7. If you want a truly mobile device for internet browsing and basic usage this is ideal. It looks stunning, feels great, and works perfectly. I have one gripe, thats the battery life with the standard battery - not great. Solved by getting the extended battery package. You can also now get this with £150.00 cash back from Sony and free Windows 7 upgrade - Happy days!!!

"BEST CHOICE FOR SIZE AND FUNCTIONALITY, BUT NOT CHEAP" 2009-08-03
By Dr. Fade Ibitoye
I have now used this Sony P series mini-netbook for 4 weeks. It is my second computer, which I need when I am away from home. It is more portable than the 9-12 inch netbooks (which is why I preferred to buy it, in spite of the higher cost). It fits into my winter-coat pockets but does not fit into my jacket pockets, so I still need a small case to carry it in summer.

As expected, the screen and text sizes are small, but there are ample options to enlarge texts: a) through control panel>ease of access>optimise visual display options, b) by using the key board Fn+F10, c) through view>text size option in internet browsers or d) via format>font size in other applications.

Windows Vista operating system takes some 80 seconds to open the home screen, but it takes a while longer to be ready for use. On the other hand the Instant Mode takes only 20 seconds to open the home screen and is instantly ready to use. Wi-Fi connectivity is easy. There is also a Vaio Everywair that recommends T-mobile broadband service, but there is no T-Mobile 3G reception in my area; therefore I bought an o2 sim card dongle (and discarded the dongle). The sim card works well via the Globe Trotter Connect software, which comes pre-loaded with the mini-netbook.

The mini-netbook has crashed twice, so I have recognised the limit to the 2 gigabyte RAM. It gets hot rather quickly, but I had been warned. I am satisfied with everything else: keyboard, cursor pointer, Motion Eye Camera, solid build, connection ports, screen resolution and two hours battery life as a trade off for small size and light weight.

In summary, this is a wonderfully small ultra-portable machine that can do most things; it very wisely has a fast access Instant Mode for some tasks and enables mobile internet access conveniently. I recommend the Sony VAIO P series as the smallest but not the cheapest mobile computer, preferably for people who need a second computer.

Takes a long time to load Windows 7. Cracks have appeared on my screen (Dec 4th) without me having caused any stress or misuse of the product. They radiate fropm a point covered by the surround so appear to be a manufacturing fault - on its way back! SONY WANT TO CHARGE £700 TO REPLACE SCREEN - Should be free as I did not damage it. Shown in advert in somebodies back pocket! I hate to think what damage this would cause! Then £700 to repair

"Good first try, but usability needs more refinement." 2009-06-10
By Gaurav Sharma (London, UK)
It feels a bit unfair to say this notebook has a very small display and keyboard. It is after all, probably the smallest lightest notebook available in the UK (640g. It's less than about a third the weight and size of a standard value 13" notebook).

BATTERY LIFE - With the default 2-cell battery, you get about 2-3 hours (perhaps closer to 2 hours in Vista, I'm using Windows 7). However, upgrade this to the 4-cell battery for around £100 like I did, and you can easily pass 5 hours, and with the notebook still weighing around 750g, the utility goes up tremendously. I recommend all buyers go for this option, and am not sure why Sony didn't include it by default (it raises the back slightly but not so much that it looks terrible).

ERGONOMICS - You can't *possibly* expect ThinkPad-like ergonomics out of something this small, and I think Sony's done a great job here, the keyboard is easy to get used to and since I'm used to trackpoints, I didn't miss the touchpad being there either. I was worried about this area but Sony more or less nailed it considering the size constraints - the trackpoint is more "hard and pointy" than "flat and big" like on ThinkPads but it works almost as well...and well, you can't buy a ThinkPad anywhere near this light.

SPEED - I went in with expectations that things such as Web browsing and Youtube etc would be fine on the Atom CPU on this thing, comprimising speed for size makes sense, but admitedly was a bit underwhelmed, sometimes things do feel a bit *too* slow and you wish you were back on your fullsize 13-15" notebook again. It's not a deal breaker though - Office 2007 runs just fine and it *is* usable, just don't expect silky smooth webpage scrolling that you're used to on your "full speed" computer.

SCREEN - This has to be the notebook's biggest weakness. 1600x768 sounds great on paper, until you realise just how *tiny* it makes everything. If you've seen their previous T series 11" notebooks, recall that those were 1366x768 on an 11" screen, and if you think *that* was small text, you're in for a nasty surprise when you try the P1. The word "microscopic" keeps coming to mind and I can't see how anyone can use Windows on it at native DPI settings. To resolve this you can tell Windows to run at higher DPI (making text, windows etc bigger, 150dpi starts to make text bearable) but this brings with it a whole host of problems (weirdly formatted webpages, install dialog boxes that are chopped off the screen, further slowdown as the weak video processer is stretched to render such a high resolution desktop) and the whole feel of the operating system just feels flakey and unoptimised. I'm really not sure what to make of it in the end - images do look amazing on it but what use is that if you sacrifice usability. Perhaps a 1280x600 resolution would have worked better (1024x600 like on the netbooks wouldn't work since this notebook is longer to fit the width of the keyboard, which is fair enough). Sony went overboard on the resolution. Portable users don't need crazy high unusable resolutions, they want something compact and practicle.

So, at the end of the day, 5/5 from me, had they gone with a more practicle more fiddle-proof display option. But I can't really complain about the rest of the system, it's as good as notebook you can get in this size, can be handled like a paperback and can completely change your usage cases when it comes to portable computing, so Sony should be applauded for at least getting their foot through the door and producing something very different from all the other relatively chunky Atom notebooks.

"Hi-Res screen makes this different to most netbooks" 2009-11-24
By ChrisW (Berkshire, UK)
Received this from amazon next day, previously few reviews of this model around on the internet.

The hi-res 1366x768 screen really does make a big difference compared to other netbooks i've seen with the lower res options. Windows 7 seems to run very well, boot up-time is very quick, and playing some AVI & DivX movies, no problem at all in that, and the quality of the screen is fantastic, so looks great too!

Windows 7 Starter has some strange things like no wallpaper changes, and you dont get the aero features but other than that can't really find anything much different. Uninstall a load of the Sony pre-installed bits and it appears to go quicker as well! I also upgraded the memory to 2Gb, despite what it says on the Sony site, it works fine and isn't that tricky to do

The pictures shown of this model aren't quite right. This is the model with the 6 cell battery, resulting in what appears to be around 6hr battery run-time so far with wifi/bluetooth turned on... i expected it to be bigger, and it is! The battery sticks out underneath the netbook more than the pictures show, some people will have an issue with that, it means that it sits at an angle, which is actually quite nice for typing on the keyboard, but equally makes it a little less compact
